I am not sure if you noticed… but everyone is talking about judgement.
How do you know if you have it? Do those of us with two or more decades of experience in senior roles have it by default? How does one notice if a junior team member has it?
It seems everyone, including myself, is suddenly obsessed with good judgement. Almost nobody can tell you, if you ask them, how to spot it.
Here's the first hard truth for those of us over 40…
Experience can actually rot your judgement. You start pattern-matching to a world that's already gone. Many times in this new world we live in, you may be off.
Judgement is actually behavior you can watch.
You can't ask "do I have good judgement?" Wrong question. You catch it in the small moments. Usually the ones nobody is grading.
Two I caught this week:
One of my interns, under 25, wasn't ready with his work. Instead of showing up half-baked and eating my time, he asked for one more day. He protected the outcome AND my calendar. That is judgement.
My AI trainer asked to move our session. He'd be getting home late and wouldn't be fresh for our nightly work. He chose the quality of the thing over the convenience of the schedule. That is judgement too.
No experience required. No seniority. Just a person reading the moment and choosing well when nobody was forcing them to.
And here's the thread. Look at both of them again. The intern was modeling MY outcome. The trainer was modeling OUR outcome. Neither was thinking about themselves.
The people with the sharpest judgement are almost always the most empathetic. They run the simulation: if I do this, what happens to the other person, to the work, to the result downstream?
So maybe good judgement is just empathy with a decision attached. Think about that.
Stop asking whether you "have" it. Watch behavior instead. Yours and theirs.
Here's your assignment for the week: catch three moments of good judgement in the people around you. Not the big calls. The little ones. The update someone didn't send. The question someone asked, or didn't feel the need to ask, before taking on a task.

Religious Focus of this month- Shinto
Each month we sit with a different tradition, not to convert anyone, but to widen how we think. This month: Shinto, the indigenous spirituality of Japan. No founder. No rulebook. Just attention paid so closely it becomes a kind of knowing.
Aiko has tended a mountain shrine above her village for thirty-one years. Every morning she walks the same path through the cedars and does something no visitor would notice. She stops. She listens. She reads the forest.
Not poetically. The way a doctor reads a face. The pitch of the stream after rain. Which birds went quiet. The smell the cedars give off days before a storm has a name. One spring she closed the trail three days before a landslide took out the switchback. No warning had been issued. “The mountain told me,” she said. They wrote it down as superstition.
It was not superstition. It was thirty years of attention, compressed into something faster than reasoning.
Shinto calls this kannagara: moving with the natural flow of things.
Not a rule you look up. A sensitivity you earn by paying attention until you feel where the world is going before it says so in words. The kami in rivers and trees are not gods barking orders. They are the grain in a piece of wood. You do not argue with the grain. You feel it and cut with it. A leader who fights the moment ruins the call.
Aiko’s knowing cannot be written down or downloaded. The young man sent to train with her wanted the checklist. There was none.
We live flooded with answers that skip the attention. A machine hands you the conclusion in a second, with no walk through the cedars behind it. Kannagara is the older, harder discipline: the knowing you earn by showing up. Aiko still cannot tell the prefecture how she knew. But the trail was closed. And the people were safe.

Where have you earned the attention that lets you feel what is coming, and where have you started outsourcing that knowing to something faster?
Impact & Sustainability
A population large enough to gather and feed together again, after the whaling era erased it. Proof that what we nearly lost can come back the moment we stop taking it.
A country handing childhood back to kids instead of algorithms. Whatever you think of it, someone decided some things are worth protecting from the feed.
Not a government program. Citizens tired of blackouts, buying panels, building their own power. Change does not always come from the top. Sometimes it comes from a million roofs.
